Plan, Schedule:  Recommended Steps/Instructions
for Brief Hybrid Workshop

Home Page for Gandhi's "Seven Blunders of the World"
That Lead to Violence ...Plus 6

  1. Intro (2 minutes)
General intro - Why we are here, what we're going to do.  "Frame" the eClip:  explain it's purpose, offer a focusing question or suggestion.
[Optional:  Distribute printed copies of the 7 Blunders - with or without the 6 additions, with URL for this Web page]

  2. eClip (4 minutes)
Play the 4-min eClip via YouTube   (or choose another version) or adapt it and offer your own introduction.

  3. Think-Pair-Share  (7 minutes)
NOTE:  This section can be usefully extended if time and interest permit.
Ask participants about additional “blunders” that would make this list even more meaningful for them personally or for their institution.
Suggest that they might jot some notes - but no one will ask to see those notes.  Give about one minute for this activity.

If time and flexibility of seating arrangements permit, urge participants to find two or three colleagues whom they do not already know at all – or, at least, whom they do not already know well - and sit together.
If that is not convenient, ask people to identify one or two colleagues sitting nearby for this small group discussion activity.

Ask these small groups to discuss the “blunders” that each person has, individually, thought about adding.  Notice how similar/different the suggested additional “blunders” are from each other.  Try to agree on one or two “blunders” that you hope others in this meeting could agree to work toward avoiding.  Identify one member of your small group to report results.

Give from five to twenty minutes for this small group discussion.  It is better to cut off discussion when some groups still want to continue than to wait until some groups are obviously finished and getting bored with waiting.  A few minutes before ending this discussion, remind groups to identify a "reporter" and agree on what that person will report.

If time permits - and there are not too many small groups - ask each to report ONE "blunder" that the small group would like others to agree to add to the list.  OR, if the small group cannot make such a recommendation, explain why.

  4. Closing:  Report, Summary, Next Steps, Collect Feedback (5 minutes)
Summarize any major consensus emerging and suggest how to build on it.  Acknowledge any major or surprising differences of opinion.  Make one or two suggestions (preferably, by repeating those heard from participants) for dealing respectfully and usefully with differences or disagreements.  Make a recommendation about extending what has been happening in this workshop - or not.

If time is limited and there are too many groups use some alternative to having every group report orally.  For examples, give each group a large post-it sheet and ask each group to write one proposed additional blunder their own sheet and to place it on a wall designated for this purpose.  Allow a few minutes for everyone to be able to walk by the posted results and read what others have written.  Perhaps ask for a few people to offer reactions to what they have just read.
