Online VS. Face-to-Face
(Never the
Same)
- Face-to-face, distance, asynchronous: What
are significant differences?
- Different in what ways? Along what
dimensions? Advantages/disadvantages of each?
- Which roles/functions fundamental to
traditional education in higher ed (e.g., library, counseling, …) translate
well/poorly from face-to-face to online? Which versions of these
roles/functions currently available need to be improved online?

Online AND Face-to-Face
(Hybrid, Blended, ...)
- Hybrid or Blended Courses
(Some students meet face-to-face some of the time; some students
interact synchronously at a distance some of the time.)
- Hybrid or Blended Programs
(Students take some courses in which the only synchronous sessions are
face-to-face; and they take some course in which the only synchronous sessions
are at a distance - not face-to-face.)
- Accelerating Change – Too Many New Options Too
Fast
Just beginning to learn, understand new options, new media, new
dimensions for communication and instruction
Can this set of forces provide the impetus for developing better ways to
use face-to-face opportunities?
