Building Community & Peace

Using the Web Locally, Internationally
Incrementally, and Inexpensively

AN EXPLORATORY SERIES

Each event in this exploratory series will:

  1. Introduce peace, social justice, or service learning initiatives and related organizations;

  2. Suggest how participants may support and extend the work of such programs - especially online;

  3. Introduce people who are actively engaged in these programs to people who are actively engaged in using information technology to support collaboration and community;  and

  4. Demonstrate and use new widely available "Low-Threshold" Internet options.

GOALS AND RATIONALE

Goals

  1. Enable and encourage more people to contribute to and extend the work of organizations and projects that build community(ies) and support peace and social justice.

  2. Enable and encourage more individuals and institutions to use the Web and the Internet appropriately and effectively to advance such work.

  3. Focus especially, but not exclusively, on individuals  affiliated with higher education (e.g., "service learning" projects) and on programs with international benefits.

Rationale
How can we use the Web and the Internet to build communities, support social justice, and move a little closer to world peace?
New tools and online resources, especially when used in conjunction with face-to-face opportunities, can help at all levels:  from the smallest team project within a single course to international programs addressing almost overwhelming challenges.

This project will use new widely available Internet options to mix live interaction among people present at specific events (national and international conferences, campus workshops, etc.) with people located at other campuses and in other countries.  We will explain and demonstrate how people can participate in this continuing exploration beyond the place and time of the event where they first encounter it.

We must not base these efforts on sloppy thinking or delusions of grandeur, although, unless we are careful, we may too easily be mistaken for doing so.  That is why we will focus on small but significant steps – steps that we can take in advancing this initiative and steps that participants can take in advancing their own work.

We share a commitment to find ways to

  • link individuals and institutions to

  • build more constructive relationships among people

  • at every level from the smallest team project within a single academic course to the boldest international peace program addressing almost overwhelming challenges, at least in part by

  • using new Internet tools and resources.
