F-LIGHT Description, Guidelines for Submitting Articles, and Back Issues

Our spotlight summary is an evaluation of a pilot test of a new academic tool for faculty. The question: should it be rolled out more widely, or not? The study was done by Chad Kjorlien and his colleagues about their use of Tegrity to capture and share elements of faculty lectures.

Other news:

  • The FridayLive! series of webcasts (every Friday at 2 PM Eastern Time) has been amazing: highly interactive and conversational, topical, and increasingly well attended (75 people on March 23 for our discussion of educational uses of Second Life.) This Friday, March 30, we'll tackle assessment. The title "Ten Most Frequently Made Objections to Assessment, and How to Respond" is only part of the story. We'll also talk about 'confusors' and conflict, all in a brief, relaxed atmosphere. To help us identify the frequently made objections that will be the focus of the session, please take a moment to pick your 'favorite' objections from this list.  There is a limit of about 90 guests in our online space, so register early and, if you can't come, let us know so we can give the spot to someone on the waiting list. For some advance reading on confusors, frequently made objections, and resistance to assessment, click here
  • The TLT Group will offer an online workshop on using accreditation self-studies to guide improvement in teaching and learning with technology. The workshop is free for individuals and teams from TLT/Flashlight subscriber institutions; others need to pay a fee (with a discount if you or your institution are affiliated with one of our many collaborating associations). For more information, click here.

Other News, Primarily for Staff and Students of TLT/Flashlight subscribing institutions. (To get the username and password for TLT Group materials, or to get a Flashlight Online account if your institution has included Flashlight Online in its subscription, ask your local contact.)

  • Free webcasts on special topics in assessment (free but only available for staff and students TLT/Flashlight subscribers). Early topics include how faculty can use Flashlight templates to improve their courses. Each of these webcasts (one every two week or so) will focus on how to evaluate a different topic described in the Flashlight Evaluation Handbook. Almost all these sessions will include demonstrations of templates on that topic that are in Flashlight Online.
  • The newest chapters of the Flashlight Evaluation Handbook deal with Second Life (needs assessment, formative evaluation) and with how to evaluate pilot tests of new technology, especially pilot tests dealing with whether or not to support the software or service for wider academic use.
  • Also for Flashlight Online users: we've added new templates to the system to help you do needs assessments for information technology support services, evaluations of educational uses of Second Life, and planning that can help you facilitate assessment workshops, accreditation self-studies, and other discussions where 'assessment' can be a 'hot button.' (see the FridayLive! session above for details on that one). For a list of all Flashlight Online templates, click here.
