Transition Tips for local Flashlight Online Administrators
l Flashlight Online 2.0
l Flashlight Online 1.0
The TLT Group wants to do everything
possible to make the transition from 1.0 to 2.0 easier.
Important: after March 2010, the old
Flashlight Online 1.0 (CTLSilhouette) server will be shut
down and the data will be destroyed. There are only
three issues for a Flashlight Online 1.0 author to consider:
-
Might I need a copy of any of my old Flashlight Online
1.0 surveys?
-
Might
I need a copy of any of the data from my 1.0 surveys?
-
Do I
want to use Flashlight Online 2.0 and, if so, how do I
get started?
You have many options for saving the
questions, including printing them (using the
"Print-Friendly" view), creating a PDF (if you haven't done
this before, there are free utilities available), and, of
course, copying
questions into Flashlight Online 2.0. In our experience,
we rarely copied surveys, word for word, into 2.0. The new
system is far more powerful and flexible than 1.0, so it was
usually worth while to consider how to upgrae the survey to
take advantage of 2.0 features. The process is often more
translation than literal copying.
For each survey from which you want to save
data, click the "Analyze" button and follow instructions.
You can either make a copy of the web page display
(printing, PDF) or else download the data in one of several
formats. It is not possible to do a bath download of
all your data from all your surveys at once.
Flashlight Online 2.0 is much smarter than
the average monkey: click
here for a list of features and
demonstrations and a handbook to help you get started.
We offer live online training about once a month as well as
online workshops targeted on certain kinds of inquiry for
which Flashlight Online can be a useful tool (scholarship of
teaching and learning, use of rubrics, program evaluation,
assessment of information literacy, etc.); take a look at
our calendar to see what's
on the schedule.
If you have questions about the transition,
or want a demonstration of any particular procedure, please
come to our "Second Tuesday" user group meetings online.
They're typically on the second Tuesday of each month at
noon, eastern time in the United States. Or send an email
with your question or request to flashlight at tltgroup.org.

You’ll see a list of everyone at
your institution who has ever had an account, going
back to the first moment your institution ever had
access to Flashlight Online. Each row in the table
lists whether that person ever logged in and, if so,
the date and time of their most recent log-in, how
many surveys they 've created during the period
they've had an account, and how many responses in
toto were received by all their surveys. NOTE: it’s
not uncommon that someone has multiple accounts.
And, of course, some people either never logged in,
never created a survey, never collected data, or
haven’t used the system in years. All those facts
should help you winnow down what may be a long list
of names into one that’s manageable. Then comes the
manual labor: looking up the current email addresses
of those people you’ve decided to contact.

If you have one or more local users need help in
copying or translating surveys from Flashlight Online
1.0 (or any other source) into Flashlight Online 2.0,
you could use a student worker for this purpose.
Training is minimal, and we'd be happy to provide such a
session online.
