Flashlight Online 2.0 is an amazing, inexpensive web-based system for building and sharing surveys, rubrics, ballots and other forms. This new system is now in limited beta test release for all TLT Group subscribing institutions.

  • Matrix surveys: different groups of respondents can be sent different mixes of questions, and at different times.  Even the wording of survey text can be tailored for different groups of respondents. (Click here for an explanation of matrix surveys.) This is just one of many features that makes Flashlight Online ideal for student course evaluation while also providing survey engines for faculty and student use. Matrix surveys enable authors to develop shorter surveys for studying complex topics.

  • Support communities of inquiry: Authors can draw on validated item banks and model surveys. Authors can also search for surveys, rubrics and item banks created by a hundred other institutions.

  • Boost response rates (e.g., by tracking who has responded, while also maintaining respondent anonymity (if desired).

  • Several options for assuring security.

  • Option to display reports to respondents as soon as they complete a survey.

  • Exceptionally user friendly and cost effective. A hosted service, authors and administrators need only a web browser.

Developed with support from the Fund for the Improvement of Postsecondary Education (FIPSE), Flashlight Online 2.0 is designed to support new approaches to student course evaluation, with each section receiving a different, tailored mix of questions, including questions from the instructor. The system will advance the scholarship of teaching and learning because of the ease with which faculty can study changes in teaching and learning, build on the work of others, and publish their tools and data online. The system can be used for longitudinal studies, accreditation self-studies, assessments using rubrics, benchmarking, and even elections.

Flashlight Online 2.0 and 1.0 have been developed, and are operated, for The TLT Group by Washington State University's Center for Teaching, Learning, and Technology. Powered by CTLT's Skylight Matrix Survey System; the system includes Flashlight item banks, model surveys, and the ability to search for and adapt surveys, item banks, rubrics, ballots, and other online forms developed by authors at other Flashlight Online user institutions .
