Flashlight Handbook Table of Contents

The value of any questionnaire or survey is limited by how it can measure what it purports to measure (validity) and whether the results stay the same when the reality stays the same (reliability).

The Flashlight Current Student Inventory was subjected to content validity testing: an 18-month series of focus groups culminated in meetings with students, faculty and administrators from the five Flashlight institutions; this was just after over 2,000 of their students had responded to surveys created with an earlier version of this Inventory.  Where the respondents liked the items and agreed on their interpretation, we retained them.  Where they had problems or suggestions, we altered items and added new ones.

Because the validity of your questionnaire will also be affected by the exact wording of items, their order, and the context in which it is administered, our efforts to assure the validity of the item bank do not guarantee the validity of your questionnaire, but they help.  Your information about the validity of items in your context could also help us improve the validity of future versions of this Inventory.
