Creating a Culture of

Encouraging Wide Use of Flashlight Online to Support a

Flashlight Evaluation Handbook Table of Contents
A few institutions are systematically
encouraging and supporting faculty efforts to improve their
teaching through gathering evidence from their courses. This
is sometimes called "creating a culture of evidence." When
the institution also encourages faculty to share what they
are learning with their colleagues, it's called supporting
the scholarship of teaching and learning (SoTL). At The TLT
Group, our best clue that this might be happening is when we
notice that an institution has many
Flashlight Online authors who are frequently using this
system to do surveys.
What have these institutions been doing to
encourage such a growing practice of inquiry? We have begun
writing institutional case studies. Each study includes both
a summary of institutional strategies and practices, plus
some examples of faculty and staff studies:
Each of these institutions has used
different strategies so we urge you to read all the cases.
One strategy that they all shared: patient persistence. They
achieved high degrees of engagement only after several years
of cumulative effort. One sign that success was emerging:
training sessions led by peers.
Other ideas and materials for creating a
culture of inquiry can be found elsewhere in the
Flashlight Evaluation Handbook.
For example, readers of this page may want to look at
how to cope with resistance to evaluation. The
Flashlight Evaluation Handbook is available, in full,
only to faculty, staff and students at subscriber
institutions. For more on subscriptions,
