[Chris Collins U of Cincinnati] She and Jeff Hiles from Wright State just produced a great overview paper about education in SL: http://edumuve.com/blended/BlendedRealitiesCalongneHiles.pdf

"Abstract
"The educational use of Second Life’s online virtual world flourished in 2006. More than 100 universities and the New Media Consortium, with over 225 member universities, museums and research centers, have a presence in Second Life. This essay on education in a virtual world begins with a description of the context and concludes with a tour of the educational courses and educators who are teaching in this virtual world, including a list of the resources and organizations that make it possible. Examples of youth education programs and university activities characterize the face of education in Second Life and reflect the successful implementation of coursework in a virtual world.

I.  2pm EDT  Welcome, Overview, Prelim Summary Survey Results, Clothing the Emperor - Steve Gilbert

II.  2:05pm EDT  Background & Context - Second Life  - Drew Smith & Ilene Frank,  University of South Florida

 A.     How is Second Life same/different from other tools, resources of this kind?  (What is "this kind"?)

 B.    Explore participants' familiarity, experience with "immersive learning environments"

ADD INTERACTIVE "POLLING" SLIDE OPTIONS - LISA STAR?

  • What are their academic, professional fields?

  • What they already know about Second Life? What is it?  What are their perceptions?

  • What are their experiences with video games, other simulations, MOOs/MUDs, other immersive learning environments, chat, Elluminate/ iVocalize, course management systems like Blackboard?

III.  2:15pm EDT Focus on Educational Examples  THIS IS THE MAIN EVENT TODAY 4/27/2007
Drew Smith & Ilene Frank, University of South Florida
Educational applications within Second Life - possibilities and examples of demonstrated, obvious, or potential value to colleges and universities for teaching and learning.   Both specific examples of successful educational uses of Second Life;  and generic questions, descriptions of successful educational uses of Second Life... For example:

  • Educational lectures in Second Life: How are they similar to and different from face-to-face lectures?

  • Students learning by creating artifacts or settings in Second Life

  • Creation of three-dimensional-appearing educational environments that students can explore for educational purposes (ancient buildings, molecules)

  • Learning new languages or cultures through interaction with people, settings in Second Life

  • Do you recreate real buildings that are like those on your campus?  Do you recreate real classrooms? Lecture halls? Classrooms where students raise their hand?

  • Should your avatar look like you – or at least your “professional you.”?  What about looking like a historical character? What about looking like something else entirely!?

  • What about the element of fantasy and fun in learning and teaching?

IV.  TIME PERMITTING Strategy, Resource, Technology & Policy issues of Second Life for colleges and universities, students, faculty members, … ; e.g.,

What are the benefits?  What are the problematic issues and concerns?

  • How can a college be responsible for support services for activities WITHIN Second Life when the institution cannot control what happens or own the underlying technology?
  • Possibilities of "stumbling" onto pornography
  • Digital divide (computer hardware and internet connectivity issues)
  • Commercial dependence
  • Constant software updates and instability of the grid
  • Griefers (i.e. troublemakers! Disruptive elements)
  • What safeguards can or should be in place?  Under whose control?   Role of "private" setting?  Effectiveness and desirability of "The Teen Grid" - intended to allow only adults who have gone through a background check in Real Life.
  • Administrative concerns:  Funding, time element, pedagogical integrity (can you show your administrators that you are teaching quality courses?)
  • Moral Issues
  • Should the seamier aspects of the Second Life world be allowed to intrude?

  • Accessibility of various kinds of virtual sex within Second Life?

  • Isn't it important for students to have all kinds of experiences? Should we invite rapists into our real life classrooms because students may encounter them out in the real world?  How is the answer different for virtual classrooms?

V.  2:50pm Closing - Rebecca Kurtz, Steve Gilbert, Sally Gilbert

  • Introduce Flashlight Online Survey - Steve Ehrmann

  • Questions to ponder;  Options for asynch discussion (sharing examples, advice);  Future?  - Steve Gilbert

  • "Last Words" - Ilene Frank & Drew Smith

  • Announcements:  relevant resources;  announce 3 week online workshops; etc.  - Sally Gilbert

  • FEEDBACK - Sally Gilbert
