see What is Second Life? at http://secondlife.com/whatis/: "Second Life is a ... virtual world entirely built and owned by its residents."

Avatars and Identity

Why does Second Life require us to select an avatar surname different from our own surnames?

This feature encourages people to disguise their identity. Other features encourage creating an avatar that would not be easily recognized as the "real" individual.

Will Second Life discourage using our "real" voices when sound becomes available?
