  F - Rita Pearson, St. Mary's College:Update regularly

Steve Gilbert, TLT Group:Jyoti - can u give URL or brief def of "universal design" - some probably not familiar with that approach

  I - gustrg@elac.edu:MERLOT is a source for speakers

J - Christina Bonner:Another resource to utilize: online resources. Great opportunities to link directly to research articles, online tutorials, case studies,...

  I - gustrg@elac.edu:virtual exchange :-)

X - Debbie Faires, San Jose State Univ, SLIS:Re cell phones in class, check out http://polleverywhere.com/

N - John Munro, Univ of Virgin Island 2:is there a best communication standard/protocol?

J - Bonnie Mullinix, Educational Consultant:Also great to have past students from a course return/re-visit with the course.

  F - Rita Pearson, St. Mary's College:Vivity

V - Lou Dennard, Southern Nazarene University:Value student input

  N - Wendy Murphy, Humber College:validate

  I - gustrg@elac.edu:Vivity?

Sheri at MRC:Love gabcast - what a bonus for students who don't have the technology at home to be able to contribute!

T - Sue Espinoza, Texas A&M University-Commerce:That is a problem when we do not have a student account to check to see what they see.  :-(

  W - David @ UKY:Wiki's for group work

N - Wendy Murphy, Humber College:windows of opportunity

Steve Gilbert, TLT Group:Has anyone used http://polleverywhere.com in courses?

I - gustrg@elac.edu:BTW, Steve noted this earlier, what is reasonable and appropriate availability and response times

X - Debbie Faires, San Jose State Univ, SLIS:X-men? :-)  develop super powers with a few good tools

F - Rita Pearson, St. Mary's College:x pect to learn something new!

I - Herb Coleman, Austin Com. College:Sorry, but I teach Human Sexuality so I have to disagree  :^)

X - Debbie Faires, San Jose State Univ, SLIS:Re cell phones--see Steve Dembo's blog post on ed'l uses including the site I mentioned: http://www.teach42.com/2008/05/06/mobile-phones-in-the-classroom-again/

I - Herb Coleman, Austin Com. College:And I always do.

robert vavala 2:Yearly review of course design/methods/content, etc.

R - Robert Voelker-Morris:Yep, Art and Gender course is taught online here, and the definition of "x-rated" can be so open.

Steve Gilbert, TLT Group:Do we have any librarians with us today who can add some comments about how to manage x-rated materials?

I - Herb Coleman, Austin Com. College:You-do it your way

I - gustrg@elac.edu:Can't add anything to what Kathy already said about X-rated

Z - Don Carter- Northern AZ Univ.:zones - distinctive areas for content & activities, safety zones, brainstorm zones, innovate/risk zones

Steve Gilbert, TLT Group:[Thanks, DebbieF - i'm really interested in ed. uses of cell phones.]

  Z - Don Carter- Northern AZ Univ.:zoetic...alive

O - katie duke:Why would you be putting x-rated material into your course--unless you are teaching human sexuality.

  N - Wendy Murphy, Humber College:zone in

  Z - Don Carter- Northern AZ Univ.:zealous

  Steve Gilbert, TLT Group:Zeal - I appreciate Kathy's enthusiasm - zealous voice!

I - gustrg@elac.edu:Zotero is a good tool for research and citation

D - Mike Strahan, Northern Michigan U.:Me either other than to keep perspective. For example, in Nursing & anatomy courses, material may appear x-rated to an outsider, but not within/necessary for the course.

K - Peter Hess, MIT:More of concern to me was the use of the word contoversial along with x rated

Z - Don Carter- Northern AZ Univ.:thanks...gotta run

D - Mike Strahan, Northern Michigan U.:Zotero is great--I teach that resource

  F - Rita Pearson, St. Mary's College:zealots make a difference!

I - gustrg@elac.edu:What about misbehavior/disrespect? one warning and then out when repeated?

Paula Williams:If it is necessary to add x-rated material, students must be prepared by giving them a rationale. As librarians, there are really no clear-cut answers. Instructors must ultimately take responsibility for the materials they present.

  J - Christina Bonner:Good speed--not to fast today.

Steve Gilbert, TLT Group:A little more explanation of "zotero" pls?

D - Mike Strahan, Northern Michigan U.:Zotero is...

V - Lou Dennard, Southern Nazarene University:Great information, Kathy.  Thank you!

I - gustrg@elac.edu:Zotero is a Firefox plug-in, and its free, to do web research

  U - Erika Beljaars-Harris, CDE:Good session, great info.

I - Herb Coleman, Austin Com. College:Actually on lie it's very easy yo "not offend" students by placing the "x-rated" materila in folders and then warn and direct the students to where it is.

L - deb pearce:great job Kathy, Thank you

U - SaraJane Tompkins:Thanks Kathy that was great.

  Lisa Star, TLT Group:http://it.nmu.edu/abc.htm

  F - Rita Pearson, St. Mary's College:Muchos gracias!

D - Mike Strahan, Northern Michigan U.:Zotero also has word processing plug-in & helps create in-text & References

Kathy Saville, Northern Michigan University:Thanks to all of you!!!

  R - David McPhail:Excellent session! Thanks...

Bonnie Mullinix, TLT Group Senior Consultant:Zotero sits on top of Firefox and allows you to manage webmaterials and resources - it is very helpful for research (traditional and media):  www.zotero.com

  Lisa Star, TLT Group:http://www.tltgroup.org/tlt-swg/FL!/FL!past.htm

L - Janet Holly, Virginia Military Institute:Wonderful webinar!  Thanks!

D - Mike Strahan, Northern Michigan U.:However, Zotero does not work with Internet Explorer

Bonnie Mullinix, TLT Group Senior Consultant:Kathy - this was great.  Wonderful timing and great participation - a model for all of us and a pleasure to experience!

  O - Sonia Ghazal:Thank you.

D - Mike Strahan, Northern Michigan U.:Zotero does major style formats.

Q - Michael Dabney, Hawaii Pacific University:Reduce disrespect by asking students to identify -- in specific behavior --  what respect and disrespect mean.  A little time taken for this will result in big behavior changes:  students hear from each other, for instance, that side-talk and cell phone ringing doesn't work for them.  I can give you more resources:  mdabney@hpu.edu

Kathy Saville, Northern Michigan University:Thank you Janet Holly, I am from Covington VA so it is great to see a name from home!

V - Dan Mandell:What does it take to prepare an instructor for teaching online?

  O - katie duke:Thank You!

D - Mike Strahan, Northern Michigan U.:Great job Kathy!

  I - gustrg@elac.edu:Thanks, Michael D, I'll try to send you a note.

X - Debbie Faires, San Jose State Univ, SLIS:Wonderful job, Kathy! Thank you

P - Joan Trabandt, Northern Virginia Community College:Thanks, Kathy.

E - Jyoti Pande, St. Louis Community College, Meramec:We offer an 8 week online institute online to prepare our faculty.

W - David @ UKY:Thank you Kathy, this was quite helpful

Kathy Saville, Northern Michigan University:Dan Mandell, send me an e-mail and we will talk!

  J - Christina Bonner:Yes, thanks, Kathy!

Steve Gilbert, TLT Group:We'll continue for another 30 mins (approx) with Q&A, encouragement to others to try microphones;  and discussing "gimmicks" for getting online participation to be more frequently and effectively interactive!

  I - gustrg@elac.edu:Great, Kathy, gotta go now.

Steve Gilbert, TLT Group:DanM et al:  "What does it take to prepare a faculty member to teach online?"  similar to "How long is a piece of rope?"

Q - Michael Dabney, Hawaii Pacific University:To Steve, Lisa, Sally, Kathy et al:  Thanks for doing this very thought-provoking session, and for modeling a neat means of engagement.

Steve Gilbert, TLT Group:In other words, it depends on how/why/who....

  Steve Gilbert, TLT Group:Great Lisa!

N - Wendy Murphy, Humber College:Kathy, I have another 'N' and it only came about because of the net:  Netiquette

N - John Munro, Univ of Virgin Island 2:audio way down?

Steve Gilbert, TLT Group:We ALWAYS like to encourage more of you to actually be "vocal" - via mic - and with this new system, we're esp. eager to have some of you try today1

Kathy Saville, Northern Michigan University:Thank you Wendy, I agree with you, Netiquette is a very good one!

Steve Gilbert, TLT Group:EXCEPT if Sally needs to talk (and if anyone on the telephone conf line wants to be heard by the rest of us)

Steve Gilbert, TLT Group:Dan sounding strong, clear!

Bonnie Mullinix, TLT Group Senior Consultant:yes

Bonnie Mullinix, TLT Group Senior Consultant:And just start with some of the features - not all.  (Wasn't H for "Hide"?  - Hide from yourself... and build forward).

Steve Gilbert, TLT Group:Faculty new to teaching online...  consider (if not required to do more at the very beginning) try just 15 minutes (or that scale) of a module

Steve Gilbert, TLT Group:Try to stack the deck so that first steps can be small and successful

J - Christina Bonner:Need to sign off at this point. Thanks again!

Bonnie Mullinix, TLT Group Senior Consultant:Nice having you Christina!

Kathy Saville, Northern Michigan University:Thanks for coming Christina

  Steve Gilbert, TLT Group:Peter - so0und  good

  Sally Gilbert, TLT Group:right!

Steve Gilbert, TLT Group:In a word:  completely

Bonnie Mullinix, TLT Group Senior Consultant:Brief Hybrid Workshops/Modules also allow faculty to experiement with how to integrate media and interaction.

Lisa Star, TLT Group:Our experience will these sessions is that many people are hesitant to take the microphone but fairly willing to type text conversations

N - John Munro, Univ of Virgin Island 2:one student can't 'hog' the communication in a chat room -- easier to segment, fragment

Paula Williams:With Large groups, you can place them into breakout sessions, with their own whiteboard, then have everyone reconvene to share their sessions. This works well with Elluminate

N - John Munro, Univ of Virgin Island 2:see steve's note about google spreadsheets for breakout groups on worksheets

  N - Wendy Murphy, Humber College:Yay FL!

Steve Gilbert, TLT Group:That was Steve Ehrmann who recently described an inter-continental hybrid sessi  on using Google Spreadsheets very effrectively

Paula Williams:Lisa, I agree. It works well, especially if you rotate the small group moderator each time.

Sue Espinoza, Texas A&M University-Commerce 3:It's also interesting to have a session where some students have microphones and some do not -- and balancing the way people communicate.

Sue Espinoza, Texas A&M University-Commerce 3:Do the people without microphones feel disadvantaged, to use Bonnie's term.  :-)

N - Wendy Murphy, Humber College:Really enjoyed the session today. Thanks to Kathy and all.  Keep up the good work :)   Bye for now.

Steve Gilbert, TLT Group:Issues raised when a variety of media are available and used:  conditions when anonymity is desriable, unacceptable, structured, etc.

Sue Espinoza, Texas A&M University-Commerce 3:Bonnie, my students have mentioned that they do feel good to hear the instructor -- they feel more connected.

Lisa Star, TLT Group:Sue - I turned you mic on

Steve Gilbert, TLT Group:Erika - sound good

Steve Gilbert, TLT Group:pls say a little more about your institution Erica

  Patrick Whitaker:feed and pay

Bonnie Mullinix, TLT Group Senior Consultant:This is a classic problem... Food is often an answer... Mandatory anything for faculty is seldom a good idea.

Paula Williams:Also, it may be useful to offer the training sessions online, allowing them more flexibility.

  Sally Gilbert, TLT Group:Intrigue 'em

Sue Espinoza, Texas A&M University-Commerce 3:give them a microphone so they can use it in their classes?

Bonnie Mullinix, TLT Group Senior Consultant:Having other respected faculty speak at & to the effectiveness of the tool is a good draw.

R - Robert Voelker-Morris:We do offer stipends for our intensive summer trainings, BUT this is another whole bunch of layers of univ. administration and the ways in which they support us.

Bonnie Mullinix, TLT Group Senior Consultant:What Kathy is describing now is what I was referring to.

N - John Munro, Univ of Virgin Island 2:small steps

  Sally Gilbert, TLT Group:right, John

Bonnie Mullinix, TLT Group Senior Consultant:yes

  Kathy Saville, Northern Michigan University:Yes

Steve Gilbert, TLT Group:Sue - sound good

  Steve Gilbert, TLT Group:www.tltgroup.org/bhw.htm

Steve Gilbert, TLT Group:sounds like we need to get Sue to help develop some of these Brief Hybrid Workshops! (BHWs)

Steve Gilbert, TLT Group:Wow!  SueE asks if OTHER folks are finding that increasing cost of fuel is pushing toward more online/hybrid courses!

Sally Gilbert, TLT Group:erika's mic is on

Kathy Saville, Northern Michigan University:Thank you Sue, e-mail me if you need me!

Lisa Star, TLT Group:Archive is at - digital, chat, and PPT - http://www.tltgroup.org/tlt-swg/FL!/FL!past.htm

N - John Munro, Univ of Virgin Island 2:full duplex audio is great

D - Mike Strahan, Northern Michigan U.:I think the structure & interaction worked well

K - Peter Hess, MIT:Interactivity is the best way to hold people's attention

R - Robert Voelker-Morris:The letter ideas was very nice to get everyone involved (specific to this session).

Sue Espinoza, Texas A&M University-Commerce 3:Kathy did a great job of getting everyone to interact throughout the session.  :-)

N - John Munro, Univ of Virgin Island 2:survey box on the side giving continual interest rating

N - John Munro, Univ of Virgin Island 2:works for monkies...

Bonnie Mullinix, TLT Group Senior Consultant:yes

Kathy Saville, Northern Michigan University:Yes sir

Sue Espinoza, Texas A&M University-Commerce 3:Greqt job by all.  Thanks.  :-)

Bonnie Mullinix, TLT Group Senior Consultant:Absolutely - Thanks Kathy, Lisa, Steve (thanks for the complement) - & everyone for a great session!

  Patrick Whitaker:Thank you all!

Lisa Star, TLT Group:Thank you everyone!
