FridayLive! Text Chat Transcript - 07/11/08
Sally Gilbert, TLT Group: (7/11/2008 13:33) hi susan
Susan Weaver, U of the Cumberlands: (13:33) Thank you - I really appreciate that.
Steve Ehrmann, TLT Group: (13:34) Needs assessment that can suggest where qualitative improvement is needed (and should be budgeted)
Lisa Star, TLT Group: (13:36) The polls are ready!
Steve Ehrmann, TLT Group: (13:36) "Faculty development" programs in the US occasionally do not include use of technology.
Howard Culbertson, Southern Nazarene University: (13:37) It's almost always "Faculty Development." I don't think I've heard "Faculty Support" here.
Molly Baker, Black Hawk College: (13:37) all of the above...faculty call it the TLC
Cheryl Bielema, University of Missouri-St. Louis: (13:37) We use faculty support and professional development.
North Central State College North Central State College: (13:37) faculty devlopment = training support = help desk/on-call
Gloria Green-Ridey, University of D. C.: (13:37) faculty development
Susan Weaver, U of the Cumberlands: (13:37) I don't use either term ... just "Susan" :-)
David McPhail, Marian College: (13:37) Faculty Development
Jane Harris: (13:37) I agree with Cheryl.
Lynn Usack, Corning Community College: (13:38) It's not an issue to my knowledge, we call all such support professional development and don't usually specify with those other terms
Leina Danao, Hawaii Pacific University: (13:38) HPU uses Faculty Support and TLC (Teaching Learning Ctr)
Robert Adams, Loras College: (13:38) Mostly Fac Dev, although we have a Center for Learning & Teaching
Steve Ehrmann, TLT Group: (13:38) Is "faculty development" used to refer to a service from the IT office?
Bonnie Mullinix, Educational Consultant: (13:39) Molly - TLC=Teaching Learning Center CTL equivalence?
Matt Wagner, Buena Vista University: (13:39) I think our faculty most likely look for "technology support" and don't necessarily refer to it as faculty development (although I do)
Bonnie Mullinix, Educational Consultant: (13:41) You being the "faculty developers/units in your institution.
Sally Gilbert, TLT Group: (13:42) why not more "person"?
North Central State College North Central State College: (13:42) the "primarily" part
Susan Weaver, U of the Cumberlands: (13:42) Primarily fulfilling role expectations
North Central State College North Central State College: (13:42) try to be holistic tho ;)
Sally Gilbert, TLT Group: (13:42) thnks for that
Lisa Star, TLT Group: (13:43) I think that is it
Lisa Star, TLT Group: (13:44) there may be an audio difference between the speakers - use your own computer volume to adjust
Sally Gilbert, TLT Group: (13:44) too loud
Lisa Star, TLT Group: (13:44) Steve E usually has a louder audio so turn your speakers down
Steve Gilbert, TLT Group: (13:44) "thrown" is correct!
Cheryl Bielema, University of Missouri-St. Louis: (13:44) Conversations about Teaching & Tech (1-2 hrs); Teaching and Technology Conference (2-day regional conf.)
Bonnie Mullinix, Educational Consultant: (13:45) Often those roles are found/addressed in the order that it was shared. Often the person (wellness, stress) is handled once the others have been introduced and integrated. Like some said, the holistic approach means that the personal support happens in consultation and even workshop settings.
Steve Gilbert, TLT Group: (13:45) We should probably re-order the lists in the polls we used
Steve Gilbert, TLT Group: (13:46) And we should more carefully explain what we mean by "primarily" in the questions that lead into the lists on the polls!
Susan Weaver, U of the Cumberlands: (13:47) :-)
Molly Baker, Black Hawk College: (13:47) annual full day adjunct academy
Steve Gilbert, TLT Group: (13:47) SusanW: your "bookmarks" and other POD award winners!
North Central State College North Central State College: (13:47) certificate program that embeds fink's instructional design model
Sally Gilbert, TLT Group: (13:48) cheryl had some suggestions earlier in the chat
Matt Wagner, Buena Vista University: (13:48) In the past I've been able to give "mini-grants" to faculty in exchange for them doing an evaluation and presenting their results
Molly Baker, Black Hawk College: (13:48) what are Susan's bookmarks?
Bonnie Mullinix, Educational Consultant: (13:48) Faculty Teaching and Learning Showcase - and other ways to highlight Faculty innovations in teaching, learning and technology.
Steve Gilbert, TLT Group: (13:48) NCSC: Certification has what kind of impact?
Metta Alsobrook, UT Dallas: (13:48) we have faculty sharing their experiences in our fac dev seminars
Susan Weaver, U of the Cumberlands: (13:48) Thank you, Steve, We are having an open house for technology this fall to show iClickers, TLT & Merlot resources, etc.
Howard Culbertson, Southern Nazarene University: (13:48) Cooperative seminars together with other small Christian universities in the area.
Jane Harris: (13:48) I do cracker barrels in my unit - where different faculty/students present their innovations.
Bonnie Mullinix, Educational Consultant: (13:49) Just-In-Time Bookmarks - Susan Weaver.
Gloria Green-Ridey, University of D. C.: (13:49) UDC is providing an online teaching certification program and this group share with each other many things about teaching online.
David McPhail, Marian College: (13:49) Faculty training on faciliating capstone simulation
Steve Gilbert, TLT Group: (13:50) Just-in-time bookmarks: http://www.ucumberlands.edu/academics/ctl/bookmarksf.html
Howard Culbertson, Southern Nazarene University: (13:50) We got into full wireless internet access as a result of several of our faculty being on a campus where they had it.
Molly Baker, Black Hawk College: (13:51) T&L Circles: theme, 4 faculty share and lead discussions
Metta Alsobrook, UT Dallas: (13:51) yes we do have panel discussion -- faculty from dif. schools talking about how they enhance writing in their classroom for example
David McPhail, Marian College: (13:51) Teaching the faculty, usually adjunct, the technical aspects of faciliating the simulation. Usually, the faculty member is well-qualified in finance, marketing, and other mangement tools.
Molly Baker, Black Hawk College: (13:51) new technologies lunch demos
Bonnie Mullinix, Educational Consultant: (13:52) These faculty learning communities (FLCs, teaching circles, working groups) are really great. Also, Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) support.
North Central State College North Central State College: (13:53) Bonnie we are starting our first pilot FLCs and I and our facultya re very excited about their potential
Gloria Green-Ridey, University of D. C.: (13:53) I am disappointed that UDC still has not put a policy in place for online teaching. Our IT person has not been replaced. He was excellent.
Molly Baker, Black Hawk College: (13:53) grant funded internet radio equipment...we did training...no one has moved beyond the training...
David McPhail, Marian College: (13:53) Team-oriented simulation produced by Management Simulations, Inc. (Chicago)
Jane Harris: (13:53) Lack of campus-level attendance at TLC sessions - both tech and traditional faculty development. Also, tenure is still based on research.
Cheryl Bielema, University of Missouri-St. Louis: (13:54) UMSL doesn't have a policy and support procedures for online teaching
Susan Weaver, U of the Cumberlands: (13:54) Disappointments - variable turnout for events, including speakers from organizations or product demos.
North Central State College North Central State College: (13:54) disappointed at faculty seeing "smart classrooms" and this driving them to use Poweproint which has negatively impacted student learning... also faculty multimedia lab fo rhtem to develop multimedia under/non utilized
Bonnie Mullinix, Educational Consultant: (13:55) North Central (Good response) Faculty led (but strategically facilitate/supported) are very powerful and generally longer term.
Matt Wagner, Buena Vista University: (13:55) Almost been a backlash against technology by some as faculty struggle to manage one-to-one classrooms (distractions, etc.)
North Central State College North Central State College: (13:55) lack of follow through/application of info form one shot workshops
geverett: (13:55) Disappointment: instead of pilot programs spreading technology use, middle-adopting faculty have often seen what early adopters have done as something that only experts can do.
Sally Gilbert, TLT Group: (13:56) more problems with "classroom discipline" which technology doesn't help address
Bonnie Mullinix, Educational Consultant: (13:56) I think we have great ideas that we can collect, organize and reshare. A great range of information from the 23 of us. A solid start!
Jane Harris: (13:57) I think that cataloging and annotating LTA web 2.0 tools for T&L would be great.
North Central State College North Central State College: (13:57) claps happily at bendin blackboard and CMS' to good pedagogy
Gloria Green-Ridey, University of D. C.: (13:58) In the next year I hope a policy and support for faculty to offer some classes as blended and/or 100% online. Also, expanding the certified group.
Bonnie Mullinix, Educational Consultant: (13:59) Hopes for - Keeping pedagogy central and in the forefront, engaging faculty in use of interactive techniques that effectively integrate technology.
North Central State College North Central State College: (14:00) what you said, Bonnie :)
North Central State College North Central State College: (14:01) or SoTL at community college level ;)
Steve Gilbert, TLT Group: (14:01) http://docs.google.com/Doc?id=ah77rqpdrwgj_339d7svgrg6
geverett: (14:02) May I suggest that the question is how to get faculty other than the same familiar faces to attend?
Steve Ehrmann, TLT Group: (14:02) yes
Jane Harris 2: (14:02) agreed
Susan Weaver, U of the Cumberlands: (14:03) Unfortunately, I have someone waiting for me to help design a syllabus. This is so pleasant and enjoyable, I'm very sorry about missing and hope to attend more Friday Live ... too many things keep coming up. Steve, Sally, I'll see you in Minnapolis.
Steve Ehrmann, TLT Group: (14:03) Bye, Susan!
Susan Weaver, U of the Cumberlands: (14:03) Bye and thank you.
Steve Ehrmann, TLT Group: (14:03) or two or three questions
North Central State College North Central State College: (14:04) unfortuantely, I have a meeting to get to as well... hope to catch a recording and participate in continuing this dialog.
Bonnie Mullinix, Educational Consultant: (14:04) geverett - I agree with you... the new ones also (the example of the 'old faces' was meant simply to underscore that sometimes even these 'regulars' are getting stressed and overtaxed. Good clarification point - thanks!
Molly Baker, Black Hawk College: (14:05) are we surveying faculty or admin?
Matt Wagner, Buena Vista University: (14:05) I would like to know why there seems to be a disconnect between "interest" in faculty development and actual follow-through, and what we can do to help turn interest into practice/adoption
Bonnie Mullinix, Educational Consultant: (14:05) Hope anyone who has to leave will be able to continue with us in the future sessions - next one July 25th Friday Live!
Steve Ehrmann, TLT Group: (14:05) Other candidates: alumni, employers, ...
Jane Harris 2: (14:05) I think the issue is time and competing urgencies - research and service.
Metta Alsobrook, UT Dallas: (14:06) I want to know how to get the tenured faculty to come to our seminars
Cheryl Bielema, University of Missouri-St. Louis: (14:06) We're facing what to offer mid-career and longer tenured faculty -- a question about what would help them achieve fulfillment, chance to give back, etc.
Steve Ehrmann, TLT Group: (14:07) if my goal is to figure out WHAT skills faculty ought to develop and/or WHAT improvements to make in the curriculum, I'd ask my questions of lots of kinds of stakeholders
Bonnie Mullinix, Educational Consultant: (14:07) I always like to begin with faculty and ask then these questions (like what Metta just asked)... Administrators can wait (perhaps a 2nd survey for them) - unless Dept Chairs (who hopefully are also responding as faculty). Our work should be facutly-centered and responsive to needs interests if they are to work.
Steve Ehrmann, TLT Group: (14:07) If my goal is to figure out HOW to engage more faculty in a goal that the faculty have already adopted, I'd survey faculty.
geverett: (14:07) I think we are experiencing oversaturation: The admin wants faculty participation in new teaching initiatives; IT says we all now have to learn Office 2007, and MS Vista, and oh, by the way, a new ERP system. The Teaching & Learning center wants participation in its initiatives. I'm afraid that instructional technology intiatives are often the very last item on the priority list.
Matt Wagner, Buena Vista University: (14:07) it is the least efficient approach - but one-on-one discussions with those faculty seems to work the best
Matt Wagner, Buena Vista University: (14:08) Great point
Metta Alsobrook, UT Dallas: (14:08) I did a special workshop for a program for the tenured faculty but only three out of 8 tenured faculty in that program came to the workshop. However, I condiser the workshop to be successfull because all three of them use the information from that workshop and use it in their classroom
Molly Baker, Black Hawk College: (14:09) you aren't hearing me
Jane Harris 2: (14:09) I do a lot of 1-1 and it seems to be appreciated. However, the consultee often shares info with his/her colleagues and in that way things do get disseminated.
Bonnie Mullinix, Educational Consultant: (14:09) That multiple pathway thing is important to remember. One-on-oneor small group, and larger workshops all lead in different directions (and often with differential participation and effect).
Molly Baker, Black Hawk College: (14:09) question was how to engage senior faculty...I was goign to respond to that
Cheryl Bielema, University of Missouri-St. Louis: (14:10) I'm sorry, but I must leave, too. Look forward to future discussions. Thanks!
Steve Gilbert, TLT Group: (14:10) Molly: Faculty come to things that other faculty lead!
Steve Ehrmann, TLT Group: (14:10) Attendance has a lot to do with content. When the College of Pharmancy and Health Sciences at Butler decided to adopt a laptop requirement for students, about 45 of 50 faculty attended a voluntary day-long workshop to talk about how to adapt teaching to take advantage of the laptops.
Matt Wagner, Buena Vista University: (14:10) I did a survey this spring to faculty on the most wanted types of workshops/training. Faculty overwhelmingly preferred one-on-one training, and then they preferred workshops targeted to specific schools or departments
Steve Gilbert, TLT Group: (14:11) Molly: T/L Circles - invite senior faculty and, invite 4 senior facult to share in 10 minutes each - ENGAGE SENIOR FACULTY BY INVITING THEM TO PRESENT/LEAD! -get positive feedback from the PRESENTERS!
Bonnie Mullinix, Educational Consultant: (14:11) Great example! I love all events that highlight faculty expertise!
Steve Gilbert, TLT Group: (14:11) Brilliant!
Steve Ehrmann, TLT Group: (14:11) Any opportunities to create workshops targeted to departments in collaboration with other colleges? Good idea?
Steve Gilbert, TLT Group: (14:12) Kind of an aikido approach! Or seduction?
Matt Wagner, Buena Vista University: (14:12) haha - the way of harmony
Steve Gilbert, TLT Group: (14:12) Do you try to identify, especially, faculty who are influential and previously uninvolved?
Michael Dabney, Hawaii Pacific University 2: (14:12) What we've found most productive at HPU is encouraging faculty to continually re-think who they want to be in the classroom, which then drives their motivation to learn from us at TLC and from each other. We get this engagement through workshops (which offer reflexction opportunities and immersion in strategic possibilities) , through email focused on specific topics, and in a great variety of other ways. In every setting we encourage sharing. And we invite senior faculty to work with us as specialists and presenters, and to serve on an Advisory Board for TLC. Modeling always leads to "If he/she can do that, I could try it too!"
Steve Gilbert, TLT Group: (14:14) "Would you consider leading a session for us?" is so much more respectful and inviting than "Hey, dummie, why don't you come to the training we offer?"
Steve Ehrmann, TLT Group: (14:14) MikeD wrote "encouraging faculty to continually re-think who they want to be in the classroom". Mike can you say more?
Michael Dabney, Hawaii Pacific University 2: (14:15) No workiong mic, sorry--I'll write somethning:
Matt Wagner, Buena Vista University: (14:15) I agree - we've gotten more interest from faculty about blogs and use of clickers when we have other faculty present on their own uses of it, than if it is a workshop from me
Molly Baker, Black Hawk College: (14:15) Take the session to them, also...dont' make them always come TO the TLC
Steve Ehrmann, TLT Group: (14:15) It's one strategy for engaging more faculty in assessment who have been opposed to "assessment." Find out how they discover what students learn, and ask them to help others learn those techniques.
Jane Harris 2: (14:16) Yes - this is what works so well about our cracker barrels - they are informal and presenters can also be participators and no one feels self conscious.\
Bonnie Mullinix, Educational Consultant: (14:16) It works also for new faculty, adjunct faculty and all - we generally have invited everyone.
Jane Harris 2: (14:16) Yes
Abby Gonzales: (14:16) No audio
Abby Gonzales: (14:16) It just came on!
Lisa Star, TLT Group: (14:17) Us midwesterners - know the term! We have cracker barrels in South Dakota
Bonnie Mullinix, Educational Consultant: (14:17) yes - w/ echo
Abby Gonzales: (14:17) Audio gone
Bonnie Mullinix, Educational Consultant: (14:17) I just lost Jane
Steve Ehrmann, TLT Group: (14:17) For some additional thoughts on supporting faculty efforts to improve their academic programs, and how TLTG might help, see the latest two entries in TLT-SWG: http://tlt-swg.blogspot.com/
Bonnie Mullinix, Educational Consultant: (14:17) start from the beginning
Lisa Star, TLT Group: (14:18) You can click on your Padlock next to the talk button
Leina Danao, Hawaii Pacific University: (14:18) You may want to lower your speakers, there's an echo.
Bonnie Mullinix, Educational Consultant: (14:18) yes
Leina Danao, Hawaii Pacific University: (14:18) yes
Steve Ehrmann, TLT Group: (14:18) Is it like a poster session? Yes that's better.
Bonnie Mullinix, Educational Consultant: (14:19) Like a poster session... or 'gallery walk'
Michael Dabney, Hawaii Pacific University 2: (14:19) In my view, personal motivation (I want to know more, try more, learn more about . . . ) is grounded in a clear sense of who I want to be as a teacher. What do I really believe about students and lack of preparation for classes? When I find students unprepared, how do I want to present myself in responding? Am I, at root, believing that if I shame and punish I will get good results? Do I want to always project a positive attitude and to encourage students? Do I believe, or want to grow toward believing, that EVERY student can leave my class a more effective human being than when he/she came in, regardless of my bar and their starting point?
Lisa Star, TLT Group: (14:19) Kind of like open sapce
Steve Gilbert, TLT Group: (14:19) How many conversations go on at the same time in the Cracker Barrel?
Sally Gilbert, TLT Group: (14:19) how do you decide who to invite?
Steve Gilbert, TLT Group: (14:20) Jane - might ahve as many as 6 at one time
Steve Gilbert, TLT Group: (14:20) "The Fall Cracker Barrel" !
Sally Gilbert, TLT Group: (14:20) molly, how do you decide who to ask?
Steve Ehrmann, TLT Group: (14:20) I think the values distinctions Mike menions are real. If they're not surfaced and addressed in a conversation among faculty, those differences can divert or abort the conversations
Metta Alsobrook, UT Dallas: (14:20) jane do you have the information about it somewhere in your website?
Bonnie Mullinix, Educational Consultant: (14:20) What's supposed to happen at a poster session (but often doesn't). I also call this a 'Station rotaion' when one group stays together and then rotates as a group to the next one at a certain interval/time (this makes it different from a poster session).
Steve Gilbert, TLT Group: (14:21) Jane: doinng Cracker Barrels for 4 years
Bonnie Mullinix, Educational Consultant: (14:21) How long do the discussions last at each session?
Bonnie Mullinix, Educational Consultant: (14:21) each station I mean.
Bonnie Mullinix, Educational Consultant: (14:22) Showcasing Faculty Expertise - Faculty as Leaders Friday Live Session.
Steve Gilbert, TLT Group: (14:23) Engaging faculty members as resources in Faculty Developent and Faculty Support activiteis for improving teaching and learning with tech
Bonnie Mullinix, Educational Consultant: (14:23) Also sounds like we have a great idea for focussing the future session for the Online Institute in August - Just what we were looking for.
Sally Gilbert, TLT Group: (14:24) seems like the STRUCTURES are especially interesting
Sally Gilbert, TLT Group: (14:24) and varied
Bonnie Mullinix, Educational Consultant: (14:24) One is open classroom, there is also the category of mentoring (when focused on teaching).
Molly Baker, Black Hawk College: (14:25) of course, these formats are part of a broad range of PD formats
Bonnie Mullinix, Educational Consultant: (14:25) Agreed Molly.
Gloria Green-Ridey, University of D. C.: (14:26) This has been an excellent session and I have new ideas to try with faculty.
Bonnie Mullinix, Educational Consultant: (14:26) That's the best isn't it Gloria!
Steve Gilbert, TLT Group: (14:26) Thanks, Gloria! When can we get together in DC?
Metta Alsobrook, UT Dallas: (14:27) is there a miling list on faculty dev (for ppl who is doing fac dev) that I can join?
Steve Gilbert, TLT Group: (14:27) http://www.tltgroup.org/CompassionatePioneering.htm
Gloria Green-Ridey, University of D. C.: (14:27) I am on vacation until August 18th.
Steve Gilbert, TLT Group: (14:27) Sept? Thursdays still best for you?
Bonnie Mullinix, Educational Consultant: (14:27) Metta - do you know about the POD Network Listserv?
Gloria Green-Ridey, University of D. C.: (14:27) Yes
Michael Dabney, Hawaii Pacific University 2: (14:28) THANK YOU to Bonnie, Lisa, Sally and the Steves -- and to everyine in today's session--for generous sharing. You encourage and stimulate us ENDLESSLY. Your encouragement and that of other contributors has been a central point in my own growth. Thanks again.

Gloria Green-Ridey, University of D. C.: (14:32) have a great weekend everyone.
Jane Harris 2: (14:32) Thanks for a stimulating session. This is a big topic.
Metta Alsobrook, UT Dallas: (14:32) I will Bonnie
Jane Harris 2: (14:32) Will do and thanks.
Lisa Star, TLT Group: (14:32) Thanks everyone!
