The Paradox of Professional Development and Hybrid Education:
If hybrid education is so good, why can't we use it more effectively to train people to use it?

Steve Gilbert and Lisa Star, TLT Group

The need for universal, lifelong, hybrid professional development is increasing rapidly.  The technologies and strategies available to offer such professional development effectively are increasing rapidly.  The gap between those in need and those responsible for helping them is widening.  This is as true on campus as online.

How can we provide better combinations of hybrid/blended education to help others offer better combinations of hybrid/blended education?

We're all tormented by the same burning question:

Why is it so difficult to engage the vast majority of college and university faculty members and other academics in educational activities to support their own continuing professional development?

On campus?
Online?

Especially when we know that the options available for improving teaching and learning are proliferating at an accelerating pace, that the demand for hybrid or blended courses is also accelerating, and that institutional commitment to offering and supporting hybrid/blended courses is growing!

We will parse the question, identify some of the most pressing needs, develop a framework for exploring this confusing challenge, begin to establish guidelines,  and commit to some modest next steps.
