Description of Workshop
Blogs, Wikis, Newsfeeds [RSS, et al.] and
Aggregators have all evolved rapidly, becoming powerful, inexpensive, and
relatively easy-to-use ways of sharing information and expressing opinions.
Do you know what they are, how to use them, and most importantly how they
might interact with
the teaching/learning environment in higher education?
With Blogs and Wikis,
and similar tools, single writers or teams of collaborators can prepare and
post new entries to the Web very quickly, without writing HTML or other code
required by older forms of Web pages. Space for readers to comment or a list of
Web links to related Web sites are common elements of these tools. Newsfeeds and
Aggregators allow constant monitoring of new information on these and other Web
sources.
This three-week online workshop will help participants understand how and why
these tools work well for on-the-run Web collaboration and publishing, as well
as for other educational purposes, and learn how to begin to use some of the
"low-threshold" options. We will also discuss some of the controversial
issues related to educational uses of these new Web-based resources/services.
(e.g., Who is responsible for helping faculty members create and use blogs?
For establishing institutional policies and guidelines for blog activities?)
- Week #1 - Tour Web-based resources beginning
with this Web page!
Understand the definitions, terminology, and technical characteristics
of Blogs, Wikis, Feeds [RSS, et al.] & Aggregators. Prepare to build
your own Blogger blog.
- Week #2 - Explore possible uses of Blogs, Wikis, Feeds [RSS, et al.] & Aggregators
for teaching and learning in higher education.
- Week #3 - Enable the integration of Blogs, Wikis, Feeds [RSS, et al.] &
Aggregators through instructional design. Provide constructive ways of
engaging in Dangerous Discussions about educational uses of blogs, wikis,
etc.
In addition to the archived hands-on workshop sessions, participants will have
access of Web resources and links for further exploration with topics such as:
- Very introductory information about blogging (for beginners)
- Useful links for information about Wikis
- Resources about educational uses of Blogs, Wikis, etc.
- Introduction to Blog authoring
- Sample Blogs
Event Delivery Platform
This is an online workshop that
will offer a combination of materials and activities available through the
Internet. There will be three weekly interactive synchronous sessions. In
addition, participants will have the opportunity to participate using the
asynchronous online tools being explored in the workshop (Blogs, Wikis,
Feeds [RSS, et al.] & Aggregators)
