Marginalizing Trends
  • Ubiquitous courseware systems
    • information silos to all course-related information
  • Textbook publishers marketing directly to faculty and students
  • Personalized subscription databases marketed directly to students – i.e. Questia
  • Web Search Engines - Google
    • The “Googlelization” phenomena - emulating Google

“Burn The Catalog”
An Illustration of the Point
  • Tim Burke, faculty member at Swarthmore, wrote:
  • “The main reason that I don’t think
  • students learn from our librarians is that
  • they’re not learning from their professors
  • how to search, either, and in some cases,
  • because the professors themselves don’t really
  • know how to navigate the brave new world of
  • catalogs and databases.”

The Blended Librarian
  • An academic librarian who
    • combines the traditional skill set of librarianship
    • with the information technologist’s hardware/software skills,
    • and the instructional or educational designer’s ability to apply technology appropriately in the teaching-learning process.
    • The BL helps faculty to achieve student learning outcomes by designing or assisting in the design of tools that facilitate the mastery of information literacy skills.

Collaborating in Courseware

Examples of Library LTAs
  • Using the library’s catalog-based or turnkey e-reserve system (#16)

  • Using table of contents alert services (#34)

  • Capturing database articles as text files and uploading captured files into courseware
    (#26)

  • Locating articles in databases using exact citations, supplementing the addition of articles to course sites or e-reserves (#26)

Blended Librarianship And Information Literacy
  • Methodology
    • Blended librarians use instructional technology to develop learning tools that educators may use to enable learners to gain information literacy skills (i.e. CMS, LTAs, LOs, RSS)

    • Forefront versus Background: the blended librarian may work behind the scenes to support the instructor who teaches information literacy in place of/or addition to the librarian doing the classroom teaching.

Collaboration With Other Academic Support Professionals
  • At your institution…
  • Are you collaborating with other academic
    support professions? (excluding teaching faculty).
  • Did you initiate the collaboration? Was a “formal” institutional program/change the outcome of this collaboration?
  • Are the other academic support professionals you have collaborated with supporting information literacy at your institution
