The instructor assigns students to write a major paper, due in a month. Students are required to submit at least one draft for feedback,10 days or more before the final deadline.

Student A submits a draft 10 days before the deadline. If papers were rated numerically and as though they were final versions, this draft might rate 60 on a scale of 100.  The student gets feedback, improves the paper, and submits it on time. Final rating might be a 75.

Student B submits a draft 15 days before the deadline. The rating might be a 50. The student submits two more drafts before the final, each time getting feedback, each time improving. Final rating might be 85.

Which student should get the higher grade? Why?

This case was suggested by the experiences of Carolyn Kirkpatrick of York College, as recounted in "Computer-Mediated Writing Instruction: Reflections on Early Experiences," in Balestri, Ehrmann, and Ferguson, Learning To Design, Designing to Learning: Using Technology to Transform the Curriculum, Washington, DC Taylor & Francis: 1992.
