Me: Hey Mike, nice to see you here! myohe1 [Mike]: Good to be here. You finally shamed me into the 21st century. myohe1 [Mike]: Scott - sounds good from here. slanghorst [Scott]: thanks myohe1 [Mike]: Hi, Sally. I'm here and can hear, but myohe1 [Mike]: no microphone. sallyg [Sally]: great! senerj [John]: I"m here! sallyg [Sally]: yeah! senerj [John]: finally -- sorry for the brinkmanship... ;-( myohe1 [Mike]: Hi, John sallyg [Sally]: steve- you sound a bit wierd..tinny is right slanghorst [Scott]: sounds good, john Moderator[senerj [John]] to slanghorst [Scott]: hey Scott, how're you doing? sallyg [Sally]: better slanghorst [Scott]: better Awingate [Anita]: Better myohe1 [Mike]: Yes. slanghorst [Scott] to senerj [John]: doing good, john myohe1 [Mike]: No. I need to run out to the store. Moderator[senerj [John]] to slanghorst [Scott]: glad to hear it -- I'm doing well as well... myohe1 [Mike]: Not now. On my way home. Moderator[SteveGilbert [Steve]]: Chjuck, are you really there? cansorge [Charles]: yes, I am here Moderator[SteveGilbert [Steve]]: Anita, can you hear me? Awingate [Anita]: I missed the information about which box I need to click to get/give up the microphone! Moderator[senerj [John]]: sounds good! sallyg [Sally]: hi chuck Awingate [Anita]: I don't have a microphone, but have dialed in, so I'm on the phone. sallyg [Sally] to Chandi,SteveGilbert [Steve],senerj [John]: it doesn't appear that way-- the TALK is either greyed out or not sallyg [Sally]: she's back Moderator[senerj [John]] to Chandi: Hi Chandi -- were you able to load my slides? sallyg [Sally]: sounds like she's in a very gentle pencil sharpener cansorge [Charles]: Sounds good. Moderator[senerj [John]] to Chandi: Never mind -- I see them now Moderator[Chandi]: we will record crusselluthsc [Cynthia]: quite an OLD picture of Cindy crusselluthsc [Cynthia]: nope Moderator[SteveGilbert [Steve]]: Voice is good! Moderator[SteveGilbert [Steve]]: NO, i defer to you! Moderator[SteveGilbert [Steve]]: Better to include people who DO have a notable perspective! Moderator[SteveGilbert [Steve]]: Sener Online Learning Services -- good, useful Moderator[SteveGilbert [Steve]]: SLS = Sener Learning Services Moderator[SteveGilbert [Steve]]: But I know that some of the folks are multiple role people krock [Kim]: I don't have a mike, but I am the manager of academic affairs Moderator[SteveGilbert [Steve]] to dpiecka [Debra C Burkey]: I'm coming to Pittsburgh in a week or so! Awingate [Anita]: If "Others" includes multiple role people, count me there (faculty & administration). dpiecka [Debra C Burkey]: Then come see me. Moderator[SteveGilbert [Steve]]: Hotlinks do not work in this environment - but we can take people to Web pages dpiecka [Debra C Burkey]: My cohort size is 12. DanB [Dan]: My online philosophy classes begin with 35 and end up at from 12 to 18. With the amount of course interactivity, how could I handle more students? myohe1 [Mike]: You haven't really learned a subject until you can teach it. In an online course, students have that opportunity to a much greater extent than in traditional class situations. This can, to some extent, relieve the nominal instructor. slanghorst [Scott]: What limits class size in tradtional classes? Is there a list of factors? Do any of the factors translate into online limitations? dpiecka [Debra C Burkey]: To Chuck: How did you organize it successfully? Moderator[SteveGilbert [Steve]]: Big issue for class size determination for F2F and online: Extent to which it is legitimate and realistic to support/require students to learn individually or in small groups! dpiecka [Debra C Burkey]: To Chuck: Was this a graduate or undergraduate statistics class? cansorge [Charles]: Classes are graduate level. slanghorst [Scott]: okay --- could someone teach a "class" in the Rose Bowl? (full of students) Moderator[senerj [John]]: they conduct classes in movie theaters... dpiecka [Debra C Burkey]: Thank you. My statistics professor last semester taught in a similar fashion, but not quite as elaborate. Videos were digitzed and burned to DVDs. We used these in addition to our textbooks. cansorge [Charles]: I have access to a TA for one of my classes. Moderator[SteveGilbert [Steve]]: Good voice! Glad to hear you've gotten so much more dexterous in manipulating Elluminate dpiecka [Debra C Burkey]: This statistics professor also received a teaching excellence award from the university. cansorge [Charles]: I get the same credit for teaching online as I do face-to-face. Moderator[senerj [John]] to slanghorst [Scott]: another answer to your question: in theory one could teach a class in the Rose Bowl -- the question for me would be what pedagogical approach would justify that -- I have a hard time identifying one slanghorst [Scott] to senerj [John]: I understand --- just trying to push the size limits myohe1 [Mike]: We offer some modest stipends for development of online courses during the summer Moderator[senerj [John]]: yes myohe1 [Mike]: Not necessarily on class size, but on willingness to teach online Moderator[SteveGilbert [Steve]]: Not hearing Dan DanB [Dan]: Oops--mike not working! Moderator[senerj [John]]: ain't technology grand... ;-) Moderator[senerj [John]] to SteveGilbert [Steve],senerj [John],Chandi: go ahead, Steve... Moderator[senerj [John]] to SteveGilbert [Steve],senerj [John],Chandi: seems that folks are more interested in listening than in discussing... DanB [Dan]: At our school the emphasis is on student centered learning, which generally translates into lots of interaction with students--for our online courses, that means bulletin boards (asynchronous) communication. I know I don't have to respond to every postings--I send e-mail summaris and comments to students for each topic--but is it the case that increasing enrollment would by its nature limit the kind of bulletin board communication we could have? Moderator[senerj [John]] to SteveGilbert [Steve],senerj [John],Chandi: Dan, I think we'll be covering that more in detail in a later session. Shorter answer for now: I've made a list of "responses to faculty who feel that they must hear from students on a weekly basis" -- I can share that with you if you like. Moderator[senerj [John]] to DanB [Dan]: Dan, I think we'll be covering that more in detail in a later session. Shorter answer for now: I've made a list of "responses to faculty who feel that they must hear from students on a weekly basis" -- I can share that with you if you like. slanghorst [Scott] to sallyg [Sally]: Sally, is the June 9 session also at 3 PM? myohe1 [Mike]: Bingo! DanB [Dan] to SteveGilbert [Steve],senerj [John],Chandi: Hi, John, yes, please send to me! dbarnett@maxinet.com. Thanks! Moderator[senerj [John]] to DanB [Dan]: will do... sallyg [Sally] to SteveGilbert [Steve],senerj [John],Chandi: when is the next session? dpiecka [Debra C Burkey]: To John: What kinds of formative evaluation do you use for your classes? Moderator[senerj [John]]: will do... sallyg [Sally] to slanghorst [Scott]: Scott- sallyg [Sally] to slanghorst [Scott]: I'm checking with Chandi. I think so Moderator[SteveGilbert [Steve]]: Sometimes i think we could run an entire workshop about alternatives to the usual uses of threaded discussion boards! DanB [Dan]: Yes--it can get crazy! Moderator[senerj [John]] to dpiecka [Debra C Burkey]: Debra -- I don't teach classes, although I do a fair amount of instructional design -- lots of strategies to use -- DanB [Dan]: Last year I team taught an Honors course--we had 7000 postings! crusselluthsc [Cynthia]: Dan: -- YIKES! dpiecka [Debra C Burkey]: When do close some of the discussion threads? myohe1 [Mike]: The electronic equivalent of, "if you can't sing well, sing loud"? Moderator[SteveGilbert [Steve]]: Identifying situations where teachers or students are being “overconscientious” and offering more viable and effective alternatives E.g., Misuse of online tools by requiring too frequent interaction … requiring every student to respond to two questions per week on a threaded discussion board with the expectation that the teacher will read and grade all student contributions and respond to most of them within the same day they were made. Moderator[senerj [John]]: Or like what non-ESL teachers do when speaking to folks for whom English is a foreign language -- if they don't understand you, just say it louder! ;-) DanB [Dan]: Good point! I know some online faculty who feel they have to respond to each student on a threaded board--the faculty member ending up teaching students to depend on the faculty member! Moderator[senerj [John]]: Dan, as you know, that is a recipe for driving oneself crazy... dpiecka [Debra C Burkey]: John, Dr. Tomei (on your first slides) formerly headed our program. rstephenson [Robert]: Thanks, and goodbye all! slanghorst [Scott]: Bye! rstephenson [Robert]: ;-) Moderator[senerj [John]]: Debra, it figures... ;-) Moderator[senerj [John]]: bye everyone dpiecka [Debra C Burkey]: We just published together:) Awingate [Anita]: Bye! dpiecka [Debra C Burkey]: Steve, what are you coming to Pittsburgh to do? Moderator[senerj [John]]: Yikes -- hmm -- perhaps you and I should have a longer conversation about this? myohe1 [Mike]: So long! crusselluthsc [Cynthia]: ok dpiecka [Debra C Burkey]: Sure, It would be fun. Bye for now. Moderator[SteveGilbert [Steve]]: Step 1: state issue and ask for responses in email to the 14 and then put results into the blog; Same time, step 2 - launch blog that allows anyone to add their comments and send info about that to larger group Moderator[SteveGilbert [Steve]]: "Hybrids always win"??? Moderator[senerj [John]]: true enough... crusselluthsc [Cynthia]: paid or contributed some resources we can hope! Moderator[senerj [John]]: [the part about the e-mail serving large #s, not the part about hybrids always win! ;-0] Moderator[senerj [John]]: works for me crusselluthsc [Cynthia]: me too Moderator[senerj [John]]: so long as I know how to access the blog... Moderator[SteveGilbert [Steve]]: http://fundamentalquestions.blogspot.com/ crusselluthsc [Cynthia]: interesting ... crusselluthsc [Cynthia]: i'm on it crusselluthsc [Cynthia]: thanks to the 2 of you
