Richard A. Detweiler (Rick)
Richard A. Detweiler is the
president of the Great Lakes Colleges Association.
Previously he was a distinguished fellow and also interim
president of the Council on Library and Information
Resources in Washington, DC; president and professor of
psychology at Hartwick College in New York; and professor of
psychology and vice president at Drew University in New
Jersey. He also holds an appointment as a foundation fellow
at Oxford University’s Harris Manchester College.
Rick is a social psychologist
specializing in intercultural relations with advanced
degrees from Princeton University (M.A., 1972 and Ph.D.
1973). Rick and his wife Carol served as Peace Corps
volunteers in the Eastern Caroline Islands from 1968-70, and
as Peace Corps trainers in 1972. Professionally he has been
an active researcher, consultant, and author in higher
education, intercultural relations, international education,
and psychology. He was active for more than a dozen years
as an evaluator of international education programs; he has
published dozens of articles related to higher education and
also to psychology, and speaks frequently on the future of
higher education, the values of the liberal arts in a global
context, and the role of digital resources in education. He
has long involvement with technology in higher education,
beginning with one of the nation’s first “computer for every
student” programs in the early 1980’s; he has made more than
50 presentations and addresses at conferences in the U.S.
and abroad; and was the recipient of the Carnegie Mellon
University/AMS Award for Achievement in Managing Information
Technology for his early contributions to the innovative use
of computer and communications technology. He was a founding
dean of the Frye Leadership Institute, and has served as a
board member of many higher education organizations.
