Erwin Boschmann
received his Ph.D. in Inorganic Chemistry from the University of Colorado,
Boulder, Colorado, and joined IUPUI in 1968, where he rose to Professor of
Chemistry. He has taught chemistry at the undergraduate and graduate levels
and served as consultant to chemistry departments in South America and
Indonesia. He is the author of several dozen articles and numerous books on
research and teaching. He chaired the American Chemical Society's national
examination committee for General, Organic, Biological Chemistry, and was a
table leader for the College Board's Educational Testing Service Advance
Placement examinations. In 1983 he received Indiana University's state-wide
H.F. Lieber Award for Distinguished Teaching, and in 1986 he was awarded a
Lilly Faculty Open Fellowship. During 1997 he served as chair of the Indiana
Section of the American Chemical Society. In 1998 he received the
Distinguished Alumnus Award from Bethel College.
From 1988 to 1998
he served as Associate Dean of the Faculties charged with responsibilities
for faculty development for the 1500 full time and 800 part time faculty at
IUPUI. Duties include implementation of technology into the curriculum, the
administration of an internal grants program, organizing workshops,
facilitation of one-on-one faculty consultations, coordination of all
awards, assistance with promotion, tenure, and sabbatical decisions,
and supervising a publications program. Offices in his portfolio included
Center for Teaching and Learning, Office for Women, Senior Academy, Minority
Faculty, Part Time faculty, all managed through the Office of Faculty and
Senior Staff Development.
In December of 1998
he was appointed as Indiana University's Associate Vice President for
Distributed Education charged with designing and implementing new
pedagogical models and technology-based delivery methods for all eight
campuses.
He retired from
Indiana University in 2004 and became the Executive Director of Plowshares
and CEO of the Indianapolis Peace House, a project funded by a Lilly
Endowment grant to Earlham, Goshen and Manchester college to promote peace
beyond their college campuses.
