Prior to accepting the Provost position at Wagner College, she was Vice Provost and Special Assistant to the President at Portland State University in Portland, Oregon. Devorah received her Ph.D. in Intercultural Communication (1984) from the University of Florida and concurrently received her certification in Gerontology. She was a faculty member in the Department of Communication Studies at PSU since 1987. In 1995, she became the first Director of Teaching and Learning in the Center for Academic Excellence at PSU. The Center provides support campuswide for all faculty and administrative development. The Center leads activities and support on teaching and learning, community university partnerships, and assessment. The Center takes the lead in supporting faculty in their expanded approaches to scholarship.
As Vice Provost and Special Assistant to the President, Devorah was also responsible for facilitating the President's campuswide initiatives. The initiatives were diversity, student advising, assessment, and internationalization. Each initiative was pervasive through all levels and contexts within the campus. The initiatives were intended to create a campus that reinforces a climate where faculty want to teach and conduct research, where staff want to work, and students want to learn.
Devorah is an active scholar. She has published extensively in journals and books addressing institutional change, faculty development, and diversity. Devorah's scholarship in faculty development focuses on institutional change in higher education, the alignment of technology and teaching, and diversity in higher education. Devorah continues to have a strong interest in student learning, teacher strategies, and continuous improvement. In 1999, she was awarded the Oregon Professor of the Year by Carnegie/CASE and the year prior was awarded the PSU Distinguished Faculty Award.
Devorah was active in the Oregon Latino
community. She was Chair of the Board of Directors for The Oregon Council
for Hispanic Advancement. And, she created the 9-institution network for
the Oregon Latino Institute, a higher education / high school year long
mentoring program for Latino students. |
