Welcome SallyG. Glad you can join us today. Hope you have a microphone and are in good voice! [SallyG] It's not Ivoc; it's me....the female explanation [SallyG] I'm going to switch headsets [Rebecca Kurtz TLT Group] you sound better! [Rebecca Kurtz TLT Group] well, we can't have that [Fran Apollo SUNY Cobleskill] No microphone, working on that for next academic year! Just glad to be here. [Lynn] I won't have a microphone today. [Chris Collins U of Cincinnati] Hi all, testing 1, 2, 3. [Priscilla Stadler LaGCC] Thanks - I may be writing more than speaking since I share an office with a colleague. [Chris Collins U of Cincinnati] HI Laura! [SallyG] yeah! [SallyG] you bet! perfect [Chris Collins U of Cincinnati] Yay! [ArtaS] Thank you! Nice to "see" you too. [LBFogle] Hi Chris. I am just getting the hang of watching the chat. [Cinda] Thank you - I will actually just be listening in today - thanks! [Chris Collins U of Cincinnati] Going afk for just a moment or two to grab a drink before we get started. See you all in a few. [SallyG] hard to hear [SallyG] tom, that sounded l9ke underwater [Tom Smyth USCA] ok. I'll probably just use chat instead my underwater mic [SallyG] I could hesar Arta. [ArtaS] thank you [SallyG] Priscilla [SallyG] you've got the microphone [SallyG] a little soft [SallyG] welcome [SallyG] click the mic button [Lisa Star TLT Group] We have quite a diverse group today - so I am hoping that you will be able to exchange information and ideas through the chat room! Don't worry if you don't have a microphone. [Priscilla Stadler LaGCC] oops - sorry - didn't mean to hog the mic! [Anthony Helm] I know that Dallas has them. [Darcy] so does Houston [Lynn] Lynn Usack, Corning Community College, Instructional Technologist [Beth Dailey] Hi all, I'm Beth Dailey from Nicolet College in Rhinelander, WI. I am Dean of Instruction. [Sue Espinoza] I'm Sue Espinoza, from Texas A&M University-Commerce faculty in Educational Technology and Higher Education. :-) [Anthony Helm] I am an Academic Technologist at Clark University in Worcester, MA. [Penny K] Penny Kuckkahn from Nicolet Area Technical College in Rhinelander, WI. [S. Mazure WVF] Sharon Fairmont State University, Fairmont, West Virginia Librarian [Darcy] Darcy Del Bosque, University of Nevada Las Vegas, Web Services Librarian [Tanu_UMass] Tanu Jain, UMass Boston, Instructional Design [Tom Smyth USCA] Hi - University of South Carolina at Aiken [Chris Collins U of Cincinnati] University of Cincinnati - IT Analyst, manage emerging technologies projects like podcasting and Second Life. [Fran Apollo SUNY Cobleskill] I am the Coordinator of Ref/Inst. at State Univ. of NY Cobleskill (Ag/Tech). [SCU] HI, I'm Susan Boyd from Santa Clara University, CA [Priscilla Stadler LaGCC] I'm Priscilla Stadler, Instructional Design Manager at LaGuardia Community College, City University of NY [LBFogle] My name is Laura Fogle. I am Educational Technology consultant. Most of my work is in K-12, but I have also written grad courses for Pearson Ed. [Cherie Dodd IU Kokomo] Chérie - Center for Teaching, Learning and Assessment [Rebecca Kurtz TLT Group] Steve G is on a blistering tour of the continental US until Wed. Erie PA today, Los Angeles this weekend, Austin TX Monday and St Paul Minnesota Tuesday! [Fran Apollo SUNY Cobleskill] where? [ArtaS] I am a professor at Bucks County Community College near Philadelphia, PA [Anthony Helm] I used to live in Bucks County, in Warminster. [SteveGilbert TLTG2] Hi, Lisa - if you want to try a new YouTube 4.5 minute eClip about my "3 Overs" - Overloaded, Overabundant Options, Overlapping Paradigms, wait aobut 5 minutes and then try [SteveGilbert TLTG2] Sorry I can't stay and be 2 places at once. Esp. if you're going to be offering BackRubs [Rebecca Kurtz TLT Group] Thanks Steve for dropping by [SteveGilbert TLTG2] This is really great stuff! Bye. [Lynn] Second Life started in 2002, thus previous to MySpace [SallyG] and we'll be offering two workshops on Second Life: a "How to" in June and educational uses in July [SallyG] what's a connector? [SallyG] most of them are clear [Sue Espinoza] So none of us are in the "normal" range. :-) [SallyG] no kidding! [Bill J] A normal user wouldn't be in a webinar. [Sue Espinoza] :-) [Beth Dailey] Good point Bill [Bill J] What if I log in once a day and stay on? [SallyG] how often do you look? [Anthony Helm] that's dense! [Tom Smyth USCA] interesting use of terminology... do we "log on" or is it simply a pervasive part of our everyday life - school network, home cabel/DSL, etc [Chris Collins U of Cincinnati] That's what I was thinking Tom. [Sue Espinoza] This is a great graphic - I used in in a graduate class to help focus folks and for them to find resources throughout the course. :-) [Bill J] logging on is a dial-up term and concept. The broadband net is ambient and pervasive. [Sue Espinoza] Bill, I'm connected all the time, but consider "logging on" as the number of times I actually use the web. :-) [LBFogle] Where is the "web bar" that Lisa mentioned? [Chris Collins U of Cincinnati] I was thinking I am "on" pretty much all the time I'm at a computer, just some services require me to log in. [Bill J] I'd make a distinction between going out to the web to use someone's else's created content and using data that I don't keep locally. [Sue Espinoza] Lisa, it would be helpful if someone could copy the links from the whiteboard into the chat area, so we could go there. :-) [Tom Smyth USCA] Google is pushing/leading us forward... [Rebecca Kurtz TLT Group] http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LRBIVRwvUeE&mode=related&search= [Chris Collins U of Cincinnati] Yes contributed, no don't want to share, it was a test! [Tom Smyth USCA] contributed to YouTube just to explore the technology.. [Cindy Russell UTHSC] Uploaded the Google Docs & Spreadsheets video that we used for one of the Friday Live sessions: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fT2y5IhlU4U [Rebecca Kurtz TLT Group] i'm seeing it now lisa [Sue Espinoza] It's working just fine. :-) [Pat WVNCC] I can't view - our institution blocks youtube and myspace [SallyG] wonderful! [Cindy Russell UTHSC] Uploaded a video of how to upload narrated PowerPoint slideshow to YouTube using Windows Movie Maker: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xZmOVt_BIAE [SallyG] Sorry Pat. It wont be long [MEA] This is hilarious, and seems to be making the rounds. It will likely go down as a classic [Sue Espinoza] This is too funny -- it will be great to send out to my current grad class of library certification students tonight. :-) [Fran Apollo SUNY Cobleskill] This is terrific; I've seen this one!! [Cherie Dodd IU Kokomo] very good [Tom Smyth USCA] finished - that's an hilarious video that has been making the rounds. It reminds me of the help I occasionally provide older" folks... [Darcy] finished [Bonnie Hunter] finished [Dennis] finished [maura] finished [Tanu_UMass] finished [Fran Apollo SUNY Cobleskill] finished [LBFogle] finished [Tina] finished [Lynn] done [Rebecca Kurtz TLT Group] thank you lisa that was very funny! [Lisa Star TLT Group] We will probably end at different times - so hang in there just another minute! [Cindy Russell UTHSC] Charles Ansorge has done a few brief LTA (low threshold activity) videos and posted them to YouTube: http://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=cansorge [Chris Collins U of Cincinnati] finished here too.. [ArtaS] new technology.... they always seem to need the personal teacher don't they? [SCU] Done [Priscilla Stadler LaGCC] thanks! [lizah] how can we get back from the YouTube [Lisa Star TLT Group] For those finsihed with the video - are any of your insitutions blocking or considering blocking Youtube or similar [Tanu_UMass] it would be interesting to see how this person would follow the graphics [SallyG] and the experienced ones can easily find the novices's problems to be funny [lizah] finish [Lisa Star TLT Group] I will move back to the presentation! [Tom Smyth USCA] My institution is NOT considering blocking such sites as YouTube. [Tom Smyth USCA] PTP bandwidth is very limited, however. [Sue Espinoza] We're not blocking. :-) [Fran Apollo SUNY Cobleskill] I'd be interested in knowing how it comes together. I have a couple of people in Graphics Arts that may be interested; bandwidth is limited though. [Tanu_UMass] Is youtibe video downloaded to users system or just streamed from the server/ [Chris Collins U of Cincinnati] just streamed [Bill J] It's not officially downloadable, but there are plenty of workarounds. [Tanu_UMass] How can it be downloaded? [Bill J] Just Google for "download youtube" to find programs and on-line services. [Tanu_UMass] thanks Bill [Tanu_UMass] Just curious is Itunes downloaded to the system or streamed [Chris Collins U of Cincinnati] iTunes is used to download or buy music. [Chris Collins U of Cincinnati] (or podcasts, videos, etc.) [Tanu_UMass] thanks [Anthony Helm] getting the blog is easy. Diligently maintaining one is a different story. [Cindy Russell UTHSC] Absolutely, Anthony! [Chris Collins U of Cincinnati] laughs! That's the truth, Anthony. [Cindy Russell UTHSC] I'm amazed at how much time doing good blog postings (versus just rambling) takes! [Chris Collins U of Cincinnati] I use the SAGE RSS reader through Firefox. [Priscilla Stadler LaGCC] exactly - i've ended up preferring to have a website so i don't have to update it as often! [LBFogle] I use Bloglines daily. [Tom Smyth USCA] my students use blogs in their internship to relate and reflect on their activites [Chris Collins U of Cincinnati] http://sage.mozdev.org/ [Cindy Russell UTHSC] http://technology-escapades.net/blog/ [SallyG] and at CREN before that [Bill J] I find readers only useful for blogs that update rarely or sporadically. Most blogs I read, I'd rather go to. [Rebecca Kurtz TLT Group] http://tlt-swg.blogspot.com/ [Tom Smyth USCA] Has anyone used an RSS feed directly to a Blackboard course site (or other)? [Chris Collins U of Cincinnati] The new version of Bb has RSS built in, I believe [Tanu_UMass] I have seen it being used on WebCt [Chris Collins U of Cincinnati] Bb 7 [Tom Smyth USCA] I've had limited success with that, with some hacking inviolved. [Chris Collins U of Cincinnati] We also created a custom coded podcasting building block that allows users to subscribe to a podcast RSS feed. [Chris Collins U of Cincinnati] (for Blackboard, that is) [Tom Smyth USCA] We use Inspire Thinking Online.™ Teams LX - 2.7.10.6143 Copyright © 2003-2007, Learning Objects, Inc. [Tom Smyth USCA] for wiki building and blogs in Blackboard 7. [Chris Collins U of Cincinnati] My favorite wiki package at the moment is pmwiki, it's pretty easy to learn for a novice admin, and the markup is simple: http://www.pmwiki.org/ [Priscilla Stadler LaGCC] an easy no-code-required tool we've used with faculty is pbwiki.com . It's free and doesn't have to be public (but can be.) [Anthony Helm] I use the pbwiki and have been pleased with it so far. [LBFogle] I didn't think of Google Docs as a wiki since it is more formatted than a typical wiki. [Sue Espinoza] I discovered it may be better to use GoogleDocs with smaller groups and not an entire class -- had problems with people messing up inadvertently and then I had to go in and restore which lost the info people had contributed between the restore and the present. :-( [Anthony Helm] We made a wiki for a presentation here on campus and I'm using one to archive a course, as well. [Chris Collins U of Cincinnati] We have a couple of faculty using it here [Sue Espinoza] Suggestions for a wiki that is accessible from public schools (k-12)? [Chris Collins U of Cincinnati] for cross collaborative projects between departments. (ellg) [Chris Collins U of Cincinnati] Sue, not sure I understand your question. Accessible as in not filtered? Or..? [LBFogle] Each school system seems to be different in what sites are blocked, but I know several k-12 teachers using wikispaces. http://www.wikispaces.com/ [Sue Espinoza] Right, Chris -- I'm looking for a wiki that will not be blocked by filters. :-) [Sue Espinoza] Thanks, LB -- I have used wikispaces and will try it for this semester. :-) [Tanu_UMass] How would it be used for education? [Dennis] I'm in CA but haven't heard of it. I have, however, heard of cell phones that only kids can hear ring. [Chris Collins U of Cincinnati] LBFogle mentioned the only other suggestion I'd have if you didn't want to run your own wiki. [Chris Collins U of Cincinnati] If you have a server available, pmwiki is very easy to admin and use. [LBFogle] A teacher could post homework assignments and students could post their responses. [Darcy] [LBFogle] Here is an example of something a middle school teacher's wiki http://science7chemreview1.wikispaces.com [MEA] How do some of these technologies work for hearing aid users? I keep hoping the convergence gets to this arena sometime soon! e.g., most earplugs, headsets are not yet compatible. [Tanu_UMass] Sorry i meant the audio device that Lisa just mentioned being used for higher education [Chris Collins U of Cincinnati] laugh!!! [Chris Collins U of Cincinnati] that's funny! [Tom Smyth USCA] [Chris Collins U of Cincinnati] (the cell phones as lighters, that is) [SallyG] I didn't realize that I was using my cell phone that way until I was in Peru and away from cell ohone. I had to buy a watch! [Chris Collins U of Cincinnati] We surveyed almost 200 students who were in a class using podcasts [Chris Collins U of Cincinnati] only 3% knew that a podcast referred to the delivery method rather than the type of content. [Tanu_UMass] Did all these students used iPods or saw these podcasts on computers too? [Sue Espinoza] Some of my students like to save the Breeze audio and then put it on their iPods to review during commutes. :-) [Chris Collins U of Cincinnati] 90+% said a podcast was any audio file on the internet that _wasn't music_. So I think the definition has become very blurry. [Maureen Greenbaum] http://webopedia.com/ is better than netlingo [Bill J] At the Computers in Libraries conference I saw a survey that said only 15% of young people have ever downloaded a podcast. [Lynn] Where do people go on a regular basis to get the latest news on what is on the horizon, what to look for? [Bill J] I also saw the linguistic shift amongst the librarians to use the word "podcast" for any downloadable audio or video. [Tanu_UMass] I would add on International news... [Cindy Russell UTHSC] I subscribe to Stephen Downes' OLDaily newsletter. He seems to be on the "b"leading edge of lots of technologies. [Chris Collins U of Cincinnati] Get hooked into a Twitter group.. if you're a netmeme, technology junkie, it's the best. [Bill J] I like the This Week in Tech podcast. [Maureen Greenbaum] here are a dozen computer dictionary web sites I have collected for my students [Maureen Greenbaum] http://faculty.ucc.edu/business-greenbaum/reference.htm [LBFogle] Lynn, I go to blogs to stay up to date. David Warlick has a great blog and podcast. [Lynn] Great, thanks! [Barbara Beckmeyer] http://www.merlot.org [Chris Collins U of Cincinnati] http://twitter.com [SCU] Great overview...Thank You [Sue Espinoza] Agreed, Sally, about Lisa doing a fabulous job. :-) [Priscilla Stadler LaGCC] thanks, all! fun! [Cindy Russell UTHSC] Great session! Always something new to explore. [Sue Espinoza] It's the former video [Beth Dailey] No [Darcy] nope [Lisa Star TLT Group] Not yet [Chris Collins U of Cincinnati] I[m seeing the YouTube page [lizah] can we get the slides [SCU] Ooops getting YouTube [Chris Collins U of Cincinnati] There we go [Sue Espinoza] Yep [LBFogle] yes [Tom Smyth USCA] [SallyG] got it now [Fran Apollo SUNY Cobleskill] YEs! [Chris Collins U of Cincinnati] Unfortunately I have to run, but thanks as always for a fantastic session! [Lisa Star TLT Group] Barbara - we are not hearing you yet [Tanu_UMass] I would like to see more examples of use of these technologies like RSS, podcasts, mashups etc being used for online education (higher education ) [Lisa Star TLT Group] Still don't hear anything [Barbara Beckmeyer] the control on my mac wasn't working [SallyG] good idea! [LBFogle] Mashups is something I would like to learn more about and even have time to try. [Sue Espinoza] I've heard of mashups and would be interested in seeing how they could be used in my graduate classroom. :-) [Rebecca Kurtz TLT Group] yes, sue. I like Lisa's categories and I think we should produce some sessions that focus specifically on these areas [Tanu_UMass] I would really like to see examples/resources of mashups besides the use of Google maps [Rebecca Kurtz TLT Group] FridayLive on June 8 will be Educational uses of Podcasting -- [Tanu_UMass] Focussing on one technology is a easy to digest [Sue Espinoza] Maybe we could start by having a series of blogs or wikis -- each focusing on one area, and when we reach a "critical mass" maybe a FridayLive session might be set? :-) [Sue Espinoza] Rebecca, I didn't see the Podcasting on the list of upcoming FridayLive sessions that y'all showed earlier? [Anthony Helm] I came across a site yesterday that is making a great educational use of the Google Earth application. http://www.googlelittrips.com/ [Rebecca Kurtz TLT Group] yes, you're right Sue. it was a late change today - i din't get that particular page updated. Thank you for reading the page!!! [Barbara Beckmeyer] I have been involved with math tutors in middle schools using video podcasts to review and comment on new teachers classroom techniques. [ArtaS] what about Learning times? [Tanu_UMass] I think with Podcasting another major issue if of digital management rights- with audio books, videos etc [Cindy Russell UTHSC] ADDITIONAL!!!!! [SallyG] yeah, Arta! [Sue Espinoza] Right,Arta, about the time -- especially learning to do the new things that we are hearing about and want to involve our students in. :-) [Fran Apollo SUNY Cobleskill] It's additional. That's why I asked in the survey...is just enough and just in time learning good enough? It cam make one a bit crazy! [Rebecca Kurtz TLT Group] one comment Arta made earlier in response to the video was about how new technologies seem to need personal teaching associated with them. i wonder how much we'll be able to do that one-on-one teaching in our increasingly globalized, distributed teaching environment? and what alternatives are there? how many of our students still do need that... [Bill J] Kids today prefer to figure things out by trial and error, or so all the experts on Millenials keep telling us. [Tanu_UMass] I think it just a learning style that they prefer [ArtaS] Describe your proposed activity if the leave is granted. I propose to revise my Face to Face, Hybrid and Online courses to better address the learning styles of current students and to enhance student engagement. The activities that I plan to accomplish during my ½ year sabbatical include: · research and develop various CAT (Classroom Assessment Techniques) for both formative and summative assessment · develop and/ [SallyG] The experts may not see the range of learning styles. It does seem that one thing we've learned is that we (teachers and learners) aren't all the same. [MEA] I just went to the site given for everything in this session and got "page not found" - is it not up yet, or have I got the URL wrong: http://www.tltgroup.org/tlt-swg/FL!/FL! [Rebecca Kurtz TLT Group] thanks everyone. I'll see you again on a future Friday! [Lisa Star TLT Group] http://www.tltgroup.org/FridayLive/20070518horizon.htm [Fran Apollo SUNY Cobleskill] Thank you...see you again! [Barbara Beckmeyer] Sorry i couldn't be more active this time...will check out the archive...thanks [Anthony Helm] thanks everyone [Sue Espinoza] Thanks everyone. Great job. :-0 [Tanu_UMass] thanks.. [Cherie Dodd IU Kokomo] bye and thanks [Lisa Star TLT Group] thanks everyone! [SallyG] Thanks Sue. Always terrific to have you
