TLT-SWG-49:  Chestnut Stuffing

This is our first family Thanksgiving when one of my children will not be with us.  On my morning walk I was thinking of her and how we’ll miss her, especially, on Thanksgiving day.  That led me back to my own first Thanksgiving away from home as a college freshman.

I went to college in New Jersey partly because I grew up in Southern California and wanted to be somewhere else.  Campus food services prepared a special meal for those of us who were stuck away from home on Thanksgiving.  I had never heard of chestnuts, so “chestnut stuffing” was a completely new and wonderful experience. 

For many years now, I’ve been making stuffing, and experimenting with new ingredients as part of our family Thanksgiving ritual.  Another part of the ritual is the complaining about some of my choices.  In the last few years my middle son has modified this tradition:  he makes another batch of stuffing without any exotic ingredients.  Everyone can choose one, the other, or try both.
