Week Two - Assignments

1.  Why Be a Peer Reviewer for MERLOT?

Michelle Kunz is the Associate Editor of Marketing for the Business Editorial Board. (I'm very proud of her). This past year she did 8 Individual Reviews and 41 Composite Reviews for MERLOT.

Elizabeth is a Peer Reviewer for the World Languages Editorial Board. I know that Laura (her Editor) thinks very highly of her.

They share some of their ideas of what peer reviewing means to them. They both won Volunteer of the Year awards from MERLOT in 2007.

Please watch the short video clip at the following site: http://taste.merlot.org/Videos/MIC_07_PeerReviewers.html

Then answer the question, what do you think you would like about peer reviewing teaching materials?

2.  Week Two - What Can You Learn from Reading a Peer Review?

MERLOT is unique in that teaching materials are peer reviewed by content experts. Please use the Browse function to get a "hit list" of materials in your discipline. As discussed today, "the cream rises to the top," so the highest rated materials appear first on your hit list.

Select one of the materials in your discipline and read the Peer Review (just click on the Peer Review link). After reading the Peer Review, answer the following questions:

1. Is this material something you would use in your class? Why or why not?

2. How beneficial was the Peer Review to your decision? Why or why not?

3. Please comment on MERLOT Peer Reviews in general.

4. Did you think about making a Member Comment?

Course (available via BlackBoard from Laura Franklin)

"Building A Collection of Online Learning Materials with MERLOT: A hands-on online workshop on how to develop a collection of MERLOT learning materials for classroom use."

Course Description:

This course, conducted online in Blackboard, will help you enhance your face to face, hybrid or online teaching with ready to use online learning materials. We will use MERLOT, a free and open resource for online teaching and learning, to find materials to enrich VCCS courses and to engage students. Course participants will:

·        become members of MERLOT in order to be able to contribute materials, post learning assignments and develop their own Personal Collections of learning materials for their VCCS courses.

·        become proficient in the use of the Search, Advanced Search, Browse and Federated Search features of MERLOT in order to find the materials they need.

·        build Personal collections specific to their discipline which will be archived directly in MERLOT.

·        discuss the useful learning materials that they find with other course participants in regular Discussion Board assignments.

·        discuss best practices for using  these learning materials in class

Course Materials:

MERLOT

http://www.merlot.org

You will become a member, search and browse the collections and make at least one Personal Collection in MERLOT.

MERLOT Voices

http://www.voices.merlot.org

You will join this community and access course assignment area by clicking MERLOT 101 on the right side of the home page. Your assignments will be contained inside the discussion boards. There is a chat area in MERLOT Voices that we may also use.

Important Information for the Participant

The course is three weeks long with deliverables each week. Participants can expect to find Announcements in the MERLOT Voices site throughout each week of the course. The Discussion Board in Voices is the main place to find Assignments each week. Some assignments are posted directly in Voices, others are done right in MERLOT.

Participants are strongly encouraged to check Voices regularly throughout the week for additional messages and customizations to the course. The instructor will also use e-mail to keep you informed of all additions to the course.  We will be an interactive learning community, so participants should expect to report their "finds" and share questions. The instructor will tailor course content to individual and collective needs.
