Publication Opportunities

For Flashlight Users

This list is just a suggestion of publication opportunities for studies issues raised by teaching and learning with technology.  We hope you will send suggestions (including a brief description and a URL or other source of further information) to Flashlight@tltgroup.org

It's always useful to read a publication first and check their guidelines.  Evaluations can be difficult to publish if the significance of their findings is limited to the institution where the study was done.  One exception to that rule can be evaluations whose findings are also 'existence proofs,' e.g., "We have shown that it is possible that X can be less resource-intensive than Y" and evaluations whose methods are worth wider attention, e.g., "We have shown how to do a resource study that faculty embraced because it helped them use their time in more efficient and fulfilling ways."  The good news is that cost studies are likely to be more publishable than other evaluations simply because so few good cost studies have been published before.

The most obvious missing piece in this list is publications that are specific to teaching in particular disciplines. If that's your interest, you'll need to fill in your own blank.

One set of publications deals primarily with issues of technology.  The Association for the Advancement of Computing in Education (AACE) has a raft of journals (http://www.aace.org/pubs/default.htm) Educause puts out two relevant periodicals, both with links from http://www.educause.edu/pub/pubs.html: Educom Review and CAUSE/EFFECT.  Also of interest as venues are the online Journal of Interactive Media in Education (http://www-jime.open.ac.uk/) and two online publications edited by James Morrison,

On The Horizon and Technology Source (http://horizon.unc.edu/)

A number of associations sponsor journals that might be appropriate, depending on your topic.  For example, if your study deals wholly or in part with costs, check out the National Association of College and University Business Officers (The Business Officer; http://www.nacubo.org/website/members/bomag/ ).  Other business publications include The Greentree Gazette (for information send e-mail to the editor, Richard Hoffman, at rhoffmann@greentreegazette.com; they will soon have a Web page at http://greentreegazette.com) and University Business (http://universitybusiness.com).  Of general interest are the many publications of the American Educational Research Association and the Association for Institutional Research [Research in Higher Education; http://www.wkap.nl/journalhome.htm/0361-0365; also the quarterly New Directions in Institutional Research published by Jossey-Bass].  Similarly you may want to check the Society for College and University Planning (SCUP) (Planning for Higher Education; for information about the journal, see http://www.scup.org/phe.htm). If your study deals with faculty or staff roles, look into the College and University Personnel Association (CUPA Journal).   And so on.  For a good and long list of higher education periodicals relating to planning, see the SCUP site at http://www.scup.org/mags.htm.  For distance learning publication, check out the online journal DEOSNEWS, published by Penn State. Researchers, practitioners, administrators, and students are invited to submit articles about distance education by e-mail to DEOSNEWS at ACSDE@PSUVM.PSU.EDU.

Among the general interest higher education magazines, one that recently printed a couple of articles (one by Steve Ehrmann) relating to costs is Change Magazine (http://www.aahe.org/change.htm). Another relevant publication is the AAHE Bulletin (http://www.aahe.org/bulletin.htm).  From the American Association of University Professors comes the magazine Academe.

Finally, there's F-LIGHT – the free monthly newsletter that the Flashlight Program puts out. We like to spotlight one study a month – 2-3 paragraphs about your problem, a finding, and what was done with it, along with a URL for more information.  To subscribe, send e-mail (no subject line) to listproc@listproc.wsu.edu with the message SUBSCRIBE F-LIGHT your name. To submit an article send it to Flashlight@tltgroup.org.

We'd like to add more relevant publications to this list. If you have a suggestion, please submit it to Flashlight@tltgroup.org .  We'll also soon post this list on our Web site.
